Dr. Lalit Sharma (PhD) has over 24 years of experience in Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP), Circular Economy, Industrial and Solid Waste Management. During his last assignment with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ India), he worked extensively with the private sector and state departments like Department of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (DoEFCC), Government of Uttar Pradesh and successfully brought various innovative business models to on-ground implementation and achieved significant results. Earlier also he worked with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), State agencies and ULB’s too. He has hands-on experience in implementing RECP measures with a focus on CE and Cleaner Production (CP) principles. with more than 300 industries. His expertise spans industrial process and product optimization, waste prevention, energy and water optimization, and the implementation of Eco-Profit and Eco-Design concepts. He has also carried out impactful measures in areas like Plastic Waste (packaging), E-waste, C&D waste, Marine litter, Single-use Plastics (SUP) alternatives, Fe & Al recycling, End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) and Legacy (dumpsite) Waste Management. He also examined and worked on the implications of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in sectors like Plastic Packaging, ELV, Tyres, and Batteries. He developed and implemented several projects in collaboration with European companies/programmes working extensively on research, innovations and CP aspects as, STENUM GmbH, Environmental Consultancy and Research-Austria, ADELPHI Consult GmbH-Germany, SINTEF Norway, International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISCs) Germany, SIEGWERK Germany, etc.

Dr. Sharma also served as the Interface of GIZ to the IC Division in the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for more than 10 years. He made significant contributions to the Indo-German Bilateral Cooperation processes and projects, being part of both, GIZ and Ministerial teams and also worked on other bilateral/multilateral cooperation initiatives (including UNDP, UNEP, BRICS, Indo-EU and few other European Union led projects). He has also been part of the ministerial support team (technical) for some milestone events during his tenure there like – COP XII to Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) held in Hyderabad, India in 2012, World Environment Day (WED) Celebration when India was global host in 2018, for which he received special recognition from the MoEFCC for his contributions, BRICS negotiations, etc. He was also part of core technical ministerial team to support Indo-German Environment Forum in 2015 and 2019, various high-level delegations’ meetings and Joint Working Groups meetings, and also contributed to the Indian Resource Panel (InRP) and participated in meetings of International Resource Panel (IRP) too – a global science-policy platform – established by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2016.

Dr. Sharma very recently led the team with a ULB, in implementing an EPR-led business model for dumpsite legacy waste management in a city. He oversaw the disposal of thousands of metric tons of legacy waste, wherein through a pioneering pilot (as part of the GIZ team), he collaborated with Producers, Importers, and Brand Owners (PIBOs) and co-processing units, waste-to-energy plants to offset coal intake by processed Refused Derived Fuel (RDF). He led the team which utilized, the plastic content (Categories I, II, and III) of RDF to fulfil EPR obligations for brand owners and contributed to Plastic Credits Exchange too. Additionally, he worked on applying calculation parameters for energy replacement by RDF, coal offset, and related CO2 emissions reduction by replacing coal.

Currently, Dr. Sharma is responsible for quality management system for climate change program at BMNS Services Private Limited, and is involved in GHG validation and verification activities. Dr. Sharma has been instrumental with ISO14001 (EMS) and undergone advance training for ISO14065 for ISO14064-1,2,3.

Dr. Sharma is awarded with PhD on “End-of-life Vehicles (ELV’s) in India: Challenges Prospect and Potential of Resource Recovery” and also holds Master’s degree in Environmental Science, M.Phil in Energy and Environment and MBA.
